Weather ... again
@RobertArthurSki joëring has been around for years - it originated in one of the Scandinavian countries. I remember seeing people do it just for laughs when we lived in Maine et Loire and when there was decent snow. I didn't have the nerve to try it myself !

Weather ... again
Grey and rain today, yesterday and the day before - so fed up with it!
However, having seen videos on the BBC of the weather in NZ just now it doesn’t seem so bad. Landslips and flooding, people killed, awful. So many tragedies due to weather and we are all to blame over many years.

Well I can now double my experience of snowthunder.exile wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 6:24 pmI have only experienced it once while still in the UK and I think it is rather rare.
Basically it is a snowstorm that then develops into a thunderstorm. Much like a conventional thunderstorm, the precipitation falls rather heavily for a minute or two after each clap of thunder but as snow rather than rain or hale.
A grey miserable day that gradually developed into harder and harder rain.
Around 21:00 it was tending towards sleet.
Then 22:30ish there was a sudden and loud clap of thunder and then it started to snow with a vengeance - and still is 3 hours later.

It's amazing just how different the weather is from area to area and how much rain and the like can be localised.
The south and west of Brittany is suffering from severe flooding, which is not entirely surprising after the very heavy rain there. Rivers are bursting their banks (or leaving their beds !) and making life difficult. It's not unusual at this time of year but next week will be spring tides, so overflowing rivers going to meet in high incoming tide will be interesting ....
We're very fortunate here as a lot of the wind and rain passes just to the north of us - we can see the squalls across the bay. We have always avoided living near a river for obvious reasons. We once looked at a house further inland but noticed the grass on one side of the house had clearly been flattened by fast running water. A definite no-no.
The temps have mainly been around 5°C and the wind from the south and west, so not cold.

It's 10C here & I've just sat on the bench at the front of my house (very sheltered) & had a coffee. It's still January & I still, after 4 years here, can't get over how mild the winters are. Love it.

Hmmmmmmmmm.
Barely above freezing and the snow from last night is slowly converting to slush. With luck it may just disappear before it actually freezes overnight - but to be honest, no real surprises. It is winter and at our altitude it is to be expected that it will snow.
