Electric bill
Well it's just dropped in to the post box, and I nearly dropped dead, 1700€ for 2 months, and I am told it's going up again. So might be time, whilst we have anything left in the bank not earmarked for EDF, to look again at the alternatives, any suggestions are more than welcome.

Do you heat with electricity? How does the usage in kwh compare with the same period last year?

Last December, 2022 to Jan 2023, HP 1442, HC935, Dec 2023 to Jan 2024, HP 2513, HC1492.
Ok so we do have a couple of wall mounted heaters which are normally on pretty low but mainly log burner and portable gas heater. No heating in the beds upstairs.

That's a bit excessive. Our winter bills are around the €400 mark but the last bill was €100 more for less actual consumption than 2022/3. 3-phase, 18kW, HP/HC obligatory for the gas/water heatpump. All electric house apart from the emergency gas hob. So the increase is making itself felt, but not to that extent We are very, very careful about making the most of the HC, though.

It was not Siberia this winter, huge bill. Type of meter? An old analogue meter, an electronic Sagem or the smart meter LINKY? Insulation and double glazing?

That's outrageous ! Two months ??? Seriously !
We are an all electric house (125m2 two floors). We keep our upstairs heaters set at 13 degrees in Winter. The downstairs heaters are not turned on unless the outside temperature drops to freezing our below. We use the wood burner to heat the downstairs area. And it isn't normally started until 14h00 at the earliest.
I will turn our bedroom heater (upstairs) up to 16 of 17 degrees on the freezing or below nights. We also have a pretty good (finally) electric blanket on the bed and an excellent duvet.
We have EDF and a Linky. I check the Linky EVERY single day to see what our usage was. It makes it pretty easy to determine what the high usage things are. Here's our monthly rundown:
Jan 2023 270€ (renovation going on)
Feb 2023 180€ " "
Mar 2023 199€ " "
April 2023 136€ (renovation finished mid month)
May 2023 120€
June 2023 114€
July 2023 116€
August 2023 118€
Sept 2023 113€
Oct 2023 112€
Nov 2023 146€
Dec 2023 202€
Jan 2024 236€
Feb 2024 155€ (as of yesterday's usage)
1700€ for two months seems WAY outside normal unless you keep the heat cranked up - which I would love to do, but can't afford it. We wear warm clothes during Winter.
