Very sad news about this great sportsman and olympian . There must be something more than we know about what a scotsman keeps inside his kilt as it very much reminds me of the bravery of one of my heroes , Doddy Weir who fought so hard against MND.

Terribly sad, at any age but at 48 it's indeed tragic. His wife too - how many curveballs can one family be thrown?

Desperately sad, particularly with two young children.
I hadn't heard about a possible cancer through cycling, but a gastro-enterologist once told me that there's a high incidence of hemorroids (sp ?) in competitive cyclists and horse riders.

Unfortunately regular checks for cancers tend to start later in life unless there's previous history. Breast and bowel cancer checks are well known, but how many men have a routine PSA test ?
The 2-yearly poo test, available in France from the age of 50, is apparently taken up by under 40% of the population.

The man I know got an infection in a saddle sore ,went to have it drained and the surgeon decided to get a CT done to have an idea of what to expect. The radiologist looked at the scan and spotted something on the edge that he wasn’t happy with. They did another scan and found a completely a symptomatic testiciular cancer. Fortunately at that stage easy to treat

I gather there is a family history ( dad and grandad) so in this case it may well be genetic.

It strikes me that there may be a correlation between
those that develop prostate cancer and cycling.

I was reflecting too the number of professional rugby players who have died or are suffering from MND. As well as Doddy Weir, Rob Burrow, Ed Slater, and Joost Westerhuizen.
