An apple a tray keeps the shoots away

A while ago I read somewhere that adding an apple to the trays when storing potatos inhibits them shooting so last year I tried it.
They had already started shooting when I introduced the apples about Octoberish but yesterday when I got some spuds out of storage I realised that they really hadn't grown much more as this time of the year, some 5 months since storing, they would normally be a lot of shoots.
