Installing loft insulation

#21 Post by Hotrodder »

I feel your pain. If I had been getting paid French hourly rates for the manual labour I've done over the years I would be living on my own island somewhere warmer than Brittany.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Installing loft insulation

I hired the machine and insulated our loft with 30 cm of ouaté de cellulose, which makes a lot of dust when being blown in but does not irritate in the way glass fibre does. I wore a good quality mask with two replaceable filter cartridges with the appropriate rating for dust, a boiler suit and a cap, and a good shower when I finished removed any dust that got through.
I laid a polythene film on the ceilings below the insulation as a vapour barrier and to stop any dust eventually getting through to the rooms below, and laid osb flooring on the joists after the insulation was in. If no flooring is used the surface of the cellulose can be sprayed with a fine mist of water, which will form a crust on the top.
The feed rate of the machine is controlled by the person at the business end, while a second person is required to cut open the bales and feed the machine, which can be placed outside, as the supply pipe can be quite long. If the machine is outside there is less dust to deal with and the second person doesn't need so much ppe.
