We have a bat in the house! Discovered it last night, whilst trying to watch Netflix and eating some fig roll and custard. Something started flapping around the room and I just thought it was a moth! Put my glasses on, and Jaysus, Derry, it's a bat!

Couldn't tempt the little flying mouse to go out, by opening the door, turning all the lights (turning everything) off. Mr B tried the same thing when it went to the other end of the house. Couldn't open all the windows with lights on, as there are hornets in the old wild bee nest in the wall - and the light draws them in! Tried the old "catch it with a tea towel" trick - nope.

It just kept flying around, the quiet sound of it's little wings freaking the cat out! Eventually it settled somewhere, and had to endure Netflix too! All I could think of was this gem of a video:



No idea where it is now - I guess we'll have to wait for the next exciting instalment when it gets dark tonight.

Sadly not!

I was doing the same in our bedroom a few months ago two nights in a row, only I was using a double size quilt cover not a tea towel. Just as useless I have to add. Just the thing to wind a person up when trying to get some sleep.

Just leave them alone.

They will find their way in. They will find their way out - probably much smarter than you. You might just ease exit by opening windows at dusk - or dawn. Unlike moths, few are attracted by the light but they may be attracted by the warmth.

Much maligned (thank you Hammer Horror films) they will keep the uninvited insect population under control. Enjoy their presence.

I’d be far more pleased to have a bat in the house than the pigeon we once had flying and flapping around our bedroom - such a mess!

We basically did. If it didn't want to fly out of the open doors we offered, it was left to it's own devices. The tea towel was only to try and guide it towards the door. Didn't appear last night, so must have found it's own entrance/exit. I'm a great believer in not messing with wildlife, even when they want to share our domestic domain. We have quite a high ceiling in the lounge, with very old, fire-blackened beams. I was using a torch to scour the area to see if little Batty was there, and there are so many cobwebs (we leave them to catch flies), it resembles Halloween!

Funniest moment must have been when Batty flew along the landing upstairs, while our son was standing at his bedroom door - he said it flew past, quite low, so he saw it from above - like a scene straight out of Scooby Doo!

We don't scare easy here, we've seen most things over the years.

Whilst you may be correct that Messrs Truss and Kwarseng have bats in the belfry, I still wonder whether you have misposted?
