New mate?

#1 Post by L Austin France »

For the last couple of years we've had a pair of Collared Doves on or around our garden bird tables until one morning early this year one was killed when trying to fly through a reflection on the kitchen windows.
What we assume was the remaining bird of the monagamous pair who mate for life has still been around on their favourite perch & was a sad sight each morning.
Collared Doves are a rare sight these days yet yesterday a few were flying around & alighting on the electric cables in the field opposite. This morning a pair were back in the garden feeding at the old pair's favourite table.
We're hoping the bereaved Dove has found a new mate . :D

We have at least 3 pairs that gobble the bird seed but I'd rather have them than the pigeons. They're not a rare sight in this area !
They like sitting on our cedar.

We had a pair that used to consummate their relationship in the same place. We called it "the naughty branch".

T hey're not rare in my garden either. One of them tried to come through the closed véranda a month or so ago and stunned himself. Our cat looked surprised but made no move to attack it as he's terrified of birds.

I don't think we have any collared doves (Biggles is the ornithologist in this house though). We certainly haven't seen them visiting for food.

We do have a spotted woodpecker which does though.

And a couple of weeks ago a kestrel flew at our French window and dazed himself for a few worrying minutes .... Pleased to say he gave himself a little shake and took off into the air again.

Had them here for years nesting in our palm tree, some years pigeons chase them out, but they always come back.
