It's always difficult with animals as they grow older. If we can just keep them comfortable and happy as long as possible .... in the end they will tell you when their time has come....
Frodo is fortunate to have his caring humans.

Frodo
It's now over 2 months since diagnosis and Frodo has been through a lot. Today we took him for his first monthly checkup. First, the scales. In the past 4 weeks his weight has increased from 6.3kg to 6.9kg which delighted both us and the vet Jean-Pierre. His heart was 'not normal' but no worse than it was 4 weeks ago. The blood test showed a slight decrease in creatinine and urea levels. J-P was pleased that the meds are maintaining a viable level of kidney function, without which he would not be able cope.
Gone are the days (fingers crossed) when Frodo would enjoy smoked salmon for a couple of days and then refuse to eat anything but minced beef or cooked chicken for another couple of days and so on. A friend recommended a brand of food with which she has had great success feeding to rescue dogs with kidney failure. It has changed Frodo's life.
It comes in 800g tins @ 4.99 each and is only available online. It is produced by Rinti and is called Singelfleisch - Pansen (bright green label). I bought it from Maxi Zoo. Since the first day Frodo was offered it 4 weeks ago, he has eaten it with relish twice every day and not refused it once - hence the gain in weight. It was initially a bit of a risk to order without being able to see if he would eat it - but it has paid off. He's back to being bright-eyed, playful and keeping us on our toes.
We have to go back for Frodo's next checkup in 4 weeks and hope he will continue to live a happy life for a long time yet.
