Charlie, who's recently adopted us, has a habit of chewing things like his bed whilst padding & purring very loud.
Why does he do this?

One of our's does this too so I think it's a cat thing

It usually means that he was deprived of his mum too young. We had this demonstrated to us when we 'adopted' a very young kitten when his lactating mum was run over by a car and killed. We (I mean I) bottle fed him every 2 hours for ages and he thrived but forever after he had the inbuilt need to suck and knead when he was in need of comfort - so I asked our lovely vet about it.

Agree with @suein56 . This is a simulated taking milk from mother's nipple. Something soft held in the mouth and a paddling action to draw the milk out. Whether it is due to being separated from mum too soon or not, I am less sure. We have one that was definitely weaned too soon which does not do this and others that were weaned at the normal time that do.

Some people refer to this as making biscuits.

I always consider this as a very contented cat action. He feels safe and loved.

Nope.Just a trick of the light on his coat.
Our moggies, who get regular fleas & tick treatment, are examined daily & the only ticks found are dead 'uns on Charlie. Chancy seems imune.
