There was an interesting item on BBC R4 about this the other day. For residents of the UK travelling to France, the advice was to get the document in the UK needed to travel and then, whilst in France on the first trip, get a European passport from a French vet, which would then be valid for the length of the rabies cover (now 3 years) and renewable upon the rabies booster being given 3 years later.

My friends did that Veem.
It was the advice given by their local vet and after a call to their vet here everything was in place before they travelled for the appropriate rendezvous and new passport to be issued before they returned to the UK.

Done, beyond belief that the cretins cancelled it in the first place. Perhaps not, come to think of it.

My friends, Sunderland resident and home owners here, have gone French with their dog too after recommendation by our vet.

We went "French" many years ago for our 5 collies when we were inbetweeners. The reason was my UK vet charged a double consultation to issue a passport "because of all the detail filling in" plus a sum for the booklet, whilst the french vet issued them to us for free.

I never had a UK or french vet refuse to make entries in passports issued in the opposite country but often it was necessary to carry two passports for some dogs as the rabies injection was recorded in an old full passport. No vet would carry forward the rabies record into a new passport if they had not administered the injection. In those days, french rabies jabs lasted one year even though it was the same serum as used in the UK.

The really irritating thing was that it cost 4 times as much to take the five dogs for a crossing on the shuttle than it cost for us two and the car!

Had our dog Jules to the vet today for his annual vaccs., and even though it is never planned for him to go to England, I always have all my dogs vaccinated against rabies and was surprised to learn that France has come into line with England now by having 3 year intervals. So he had one today and the next is not due till September 2024.

That was good, what was not so good was that I had to wait in the car with him because he howled the place down because all the other dogs there did not want to be friends with him. Boss the Rottie was just the same. Gentle but fierce looking dogs seem to have a similar problem. He behaved very well as the vet examined him all over though.

Slight downside, but not much because I was soon dry again, after waiting weeks for a drop of rain the heavens opened just long enough for me to get back and forth to the car. I was soaked to the skin.

Don't you believe it, I couldn't wait to get right into it as soon as we were home, I was actually warmer in there than in the cold drops falling on my bare skin as I ran up to the pond.
