It is the scanning of the passport that records entry and exit. Stamping is really just the theatrical part!
It doesn’t yet record it. That will come later this year.
Do you have evidence for that?
I have strong suspicions that data from the chips and perhaps other tracking systems has been going on for more than a decade.
Otherwise rationalise this:
Arrival at a UK port, and a comment from border control. "will this be a pleasure trip this time sir?"
Previously arrivals had been by air for business purposes with departure within 72 hours.
It has been widely reported that until the ETIAS system is introduced people crossing between England and France will not have their entry or exit electronically so their passports will be stamped. It’s also been widely reported that up to this point there has never been any official record of how long Britons were spending out of the country. This cropped up a lot during the controlling our borders debate for Brexit.
For a couple of years when we were going back and forewards a lot, till pa-in-law passed on, our passports were just scanned.
On our getting our French nationality a look of surprise came from the UK border followed by a big grin.
Obviously it was put on by the border over here.
Well today the French passport control took both my passport and my permit, as always - but then spent a minute typing something into his computer which they have never done before. I wonder if this is the start of enrolling permit holders into ETIAS automatically?
Well it was the second trip on the new passport - but you are right, the first time they did not seem to take down details so that may be the reason, especially as the old passport was used to register for the permit.
New permit request going in this week - so will see what happens with that.
