Thoroughly modern gateway, most odd. Brick pillars were never there before and would have been stone with carriage wheel cones on the sides. such a covered way means small van deliveries and house moving. no chance for a container truck to access, or even the fire brigade. I think someone found some old fencing and gates and thought up this awful design and impractical entrance.

By chance, I was leafing through some books and magazines on French architecture yesterday morning, and somewhere in there was a page about the mistakes you’d be wise to avoid when renovating old French houses.
From a list of ten commandments / pitfalls, here are numbers 3 and 4. And a picture of a house with more classical portailles here in the heart of the Nièvre. To conclude: very cool portailles.
