What was the building used for? As there appear to be grills on the doors.

It was a prison!
It is the Panoptic Prison in Autun currently being upgraded(?) for the expansion of the Rolin Museum. It was used in ww2 by the Nazis to hold members of the maquis. It is completely round with an excercise area on the roof with a wooden roof. Sadly it is only open occaisionally.

Thanks for that, it looks interesting. I love delving into the history of old buildings - I'll have a google to find out more, and add it to my 'places to visit' list.
