My latest project has been a case for my VR headset.
It's a basic case, but with plastic stiffening, foam lining layers, a stretch leather pocket on the lid and removable paddling on the inside.

@ Naylor's Ark, now that we're talking about foam lining layers, I have noticed differences in quality. For my rather expensive electronic measuring equipment, I have several carrying cases from Fluke, for (multi)meters that are still as accurate after a few decades as they were when they were new. That creates expectations. Unfortunately, the black foam used in those carrying cases starts to slowly disintegrate after a few years, leaving behind lots of loose black crumbs. I hope your choice of foam layers works out better. You want to pamper that kind of equipment a little, don't you?

Also the glue that is used disintegrates. I have some old batting, which is good but the glue is just a dusty mess.

Often the interaction of glue with foam augments the rate of breakdown.
Direct light and the general atmosphere also impact on foam stability
I don't think there are any simple rules.
Sadly I have heard of sludgy messes as well as powder hell.

I have found that EPE (expanded polyethylene) is probably a good choice. From some deliveries of articles, the package usually contains some of this for protection, It is a harder sponge than others but does give when squeezed, A piece of this EPE from a package has been in my toolbox for years and I use it to rub jointing in when tiling bathrooms etc. That would seem like a good abrasion test and it survives untouched.
