One of my daughters (a hospital consultant) wears a surgical mask when not working, one of the white ones when in hospital.

They seem to protect those of us who work with infected people !
What I have found is the Chinese-made surgical masks gave me dry red patches around mouth and nose. I switched to the French-made ones issued at work which are slightly bigger and the problem has gone away.

It's a shame that it's being reported that SA feel they are being punished for finding a new variant, by stopping flights. Probably a news spin, but surely, if you identify a problem, you try to contain it as fast as possible. If not, have we learnt nothing over the last two years?

Absolutely, Bayleaf! I've long been convinced that if there had been more, faster and longer bans on anything other than strictly essential international travel, we wouldn't be in the situation we're currently in. We, as a species, just don't seem able to self-impose the measures necessary to halt this plague. It's not as though we don't have the technology to communicate from one side of the world to the other

Isn't that why they stopped saying the "Kent variant" etc and switched to Greek letters?Bayleaf wrote: ↑Sat Nov 27, 2021 5:07 pmIt's a shame that it's being reported that SA feel they are being punished for finding a new variant, by stopping flights. But the UK was previously slated for the same reasons - when at the time something like 50% of the world's testing was being done in the UK.
Suspension of flights I think is temporary - until the quarantine hotels are reestablished.

Please do not post nonsense.
They protect others. Do I have to post the link once more for those hard of understanding that surgical masks protect others?
Are there better masks? Yes certainly but please do not denigrate the cheap and effective solution for the population at large.

Humanity landed on the moon over fifty years ago but it seems too much to ask for a reliable telephone/internet service in rural France.

A surgical mask, often blue, will work well against microbes, etc. These are ONE THOUSAND times larger than viruses and in particular corona viruses. Actually the white colour is prima facie of no
significance but does complement the "Florence" aura.
