The Netherlands will impose Western Europe's first partial lockdown since the summer this weekend, in a bid to stop a surge in Covid-19 cases, Dutch broadcaster NOS said on Friday.

Sadly, with numbers creeping up elsewhere like in Germany and here, I wonder whether this is a harbinger of wider and more extensive lockdowns - even for the "jabbed".

I see that Austria is thinking about confinement for the unvaccinated but it will be difficult to impose.
We're doing PCRs for an increasing number of people who have symptoms, who have been in contact with an infected person or who have received an sms from the Assurance Maladie re contact. Virtually all of them have been vaccinated...

But didn't the Dutch ditch restrictions in the summer?

Re: Austria - I think it will be easier to police than you imagine. Austrians and Germans are very rule driven. If they are told they must stay home except to..... The majority will do just that.

Re: positive PCRs being in the majority with vaccinated people. This is unexpected. Once the vast majority of people have been vaccinated and given that vaccination does not give 100% protection, it follows that the majority of cases will be in the vaccinated population. It is the statistical paradox that I think has been posted here elsewhere*. The number of serious cases is however dramatically reduced.

*To try and explain this I take a real example from my work. A plastics moulder complained that he was getting 60% more breakages from our material than from our competitor. So we asked what was the proportion of use of our material compared with the competitor. 4:1 in favour of you was the reply. Well on that basis we should have 4 times more breakages than the competitor then but it is only 2/3 more.

I think you mean not unexpected !
I agree. However, we're still getting plenty of people who are unvaccinated and are happy to pay for a PCR - those who have come down for the weekend and need a PCR for returning home by train, for example.
We're getting first timers trickling through for vaccination, without fuss, which is great. However, some of the oldies are less than keen to have a 3rd jab.
We see all sorts here, it's very interesting seeing the other side of the coin .... it's a great experience !

I think the French gov were prepared for this to a certain extent they made sure children going back to school after Toussaint had to wear masks in class again.
Around this way it's very rare to see people not wearing masks, they wear them in the street not just when they go into a shop - You could spot the visitors here from all over France during Toussaint because the vast majority weren't wearing masks.

Everyone is mask wearing here, even in shop car parks.

When recently in UK hardly anyone wore a mask. We were the freaks for wearing one

The CA of one of my music associations has just decided that we must wear masks when playing inside. Only wind instruments will be exempt. It's only a matter of time before our singing group will have to impose the same thing, which unfortunately will mean it will no longer be possible to practise. The Prefet of our department has already insisted on the cancellation of events like Fest Noz Prefets can impose restrictions as they see fit - and rightly so if it can reduce the spread of infection.
