It’s about time we raised a toast to all the classic cars still on the road. With or without alcohol – the choice is yours. And should it ever come to the point where the internal combustion engine is completely banned, we’ll just get on our bikes from then on. What could be more environmentally friendly than that? As long as you don’t ride an electric bike, but let’s leave that discussion for another time.

Two rugged Scandinavians, a 1977 SAAB and – load it up – a 1993 Volvo Estate (240 Polar U9). U9 classification: a German/Dutch market regulatory code signifying a vehicle equipped with a controlled three-way catalytic converter and lambda-sond meeting strict 1989/1990 emissions laws. Polar trim: a value-oriented final-production trim level in Europe featuring upgrades like plush or tricot cloth upholstery, central locking, electric windows, and specific alloy or multi-spoke wheels.

A car for DIY enthusiasts that still has proper roof gutters, which in this case support five roof crossbars. All solid stuff from Sweden. And, of course, a tow bar. What will it be this time: a few long beams, sand and cement, plasterboard, a set of kitchen cupboards, a fridge, a table, removal service? Of course, the professionals drive around in something a bit bigger and newer, but they, too, are generally white in colour in France.




You can go even further back in time, to a 1961 SAAB model. Also available in red, (Saab 95 V4 Estate,1967).

It’s unmistakably a Land Rover Defender. Once you know what the first version from 1948 looked like, you’ll always recognise them – much the same story as with the Volvo Estate. Strictly speaking, this one doesn’t quite belong in the Classic Cars section, as it rolled off the production line in 2013. But given its classic looks, it’s still well worth a look.

Years ago I had thought of getting a Saab but I didn't like the freewheel. I bought an Alfa Romeo 2000 Berlina instead.
