Cheapo repair

#1 Post by L Austin France »

I haven't used my 22 yo pug 806 for yonks & the other day I found the headlining had come adrift & was hanging down like a sad old pair of curtains..
A pucker specialist repair would have cost more than the car was worth so a DIY job was required.
6 hours for me & a pal with a hair dryer had it pretty much back in place & if comes unstuck again the pop on buttons will ensure it doesn't go far.
Result for about 16 euros & bit of graft.

Well done you - just out of interest what are the press studs attached to?

Male part of the set which attaches to the headliner board with screws.
Bit of a faff getting them in nice lines when the roof has so many compound curves but the result was quite pleasing.

Thanks for that. The roof lining in my Golf is held up by two wooden disposable forks in the middle of the car, they’re wedged into the rear passenger light. I must get around to finding a better solution. The problem is that the temporary ‘fix’ is good enough to make it out of sight and out of mind.

Bit more push and it would look like a chesterfield sofa. Great fix, I would never have thought of that.

If anyone has a sagging liner & wants a quick & simple fix to hold it up, twist pins could be the answer.
Easy to use & relatively unobtrusive.

Respect :!:

It must have been an absolute pig to get access without undoing all around the edges. I have done a few overhead linings on boats and they were all very tricky, even using a new oversized lining.

Edit: Having looked at the Amazon link it appears that you don't have to get behind the headlining at all. It appears that you just use the drawing pins in the kit to establish where to place the buttons. Hopefully there is a hard lining in there somewhere to take the self-tappers that hold the button snaps. In the cars I have experience with you would have to drive the screws into the roof which would be less than ideal, especially when it rains.

Humanity landed on the moon over fifty years ago but it seems too much to ask for a reliable telephone/internet service in rural France.

This morning the lining had pulled away in a few places on compound concave curves but only just noticeable as the pop studs held it in place.
It seemed like maybe the hair dryer had not reconstituted the glue sufficiently so I tried steam from my wife's steam cleaner on them.
Seems like the steam has worked as all is now good & the cloth certainly seemed more inclined to take the odd shapes.
So far so good!

Following with interest! We also have an old car that needs the same treatment ..... all methods of glueing etc. have been unsuccessful so far.
