Apparently the suspect said he was targeting officials close to Trump. Yet as usual, Trump has managed to turn everything back to himself.

Trump immediately posted his thoughts on social media. He'd wanted the dinner to continue but was told it couldn't.

I watched the video. There was no sound recorded but something prompted the crowd to start diving for cover while at the same moment the Orange Turd was calmly facing the person next to him without a care in the world. Why was he so calm when everyone else in the room was in panic mode? Just like the farce when he popped the fake blood capsule. Scumbag!

It's very easy to get sucked into conspiracy theories and the US is one of the worst for this kind of paranoia. There are rumours going round that even Maga members are beginning to wonder if this event has been staged. The man didn't get further than the hotel lobby - if he had managed to get into the ballroom, he would almost certainly have been shot by the security forces. The bit of film looks rather convenient and Trump was remarkably quick to get hold of it, same for the photo of the gunman.
The hotel has 1200 rooms and apart from the ballroom area, the rest of the hotel was accessible. If the security guards had been facing outwards, they surely would have seen the would-be assailant before he rushed past them ....
But it's so easy to speculate ....

He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. He did not get through. He was stopped at the perimeter.
Here is the critical detail that is getting lost in all the noise: the incident happened on a floor above where the dinner was actually taking place. Not in the room. Not near the room. Up a flight of stairs, past multiple security layers, in a part of the hotel that was open to the general public because the Secret Service only secured the specific areas of the WHCA event — not the entire building. Law enforcement officials confirmed this. The suspect never breached the secured zone. The president, vice president, cabinet officials, and guests were nowhere close to this.
That is not a minor footnote. That is a major part of this story.
And yet, within thirty minutes of the incident, Donald Trump was at a podium holding a press conference, not to reassure the public, not to thank law enforcement, but to demand his golden ballroom. He and his officials were all smiles. Karoline Leavitt had a grin on her face. Pete Hegseth was photographed beaming. Alina Habba posted on Instagram that she “slayed on the look” with a photo of herself from the event, captioned “10/10.” These are the people who want you to believe this was a harrowing, historic moment of danger.
And then there was Dan Scavino. As guests were still processing what had just happened, Scavino decided the moment called for a rousing “USA! USA!” chant. It did not land. The response from the room was total silence. Not even Trump’s own allies joined in. The only thing audible, per footage reviewed from inside the room, was a wave of “shhhhs” from the audience and people telling him to shut up. This is the man as close to Trump as anyone in the regime, and his read on the room in that moment was to try to start a rally chant. It was perhaps the most accidentally revealing and cringeworthy moment of the entire night.

It's quite normal for the president and vp to be kept separate in such instances. But why did the people who "removed" Trump come in from the side of the stage where Vance was ? Where were the bodyguards etc on the Trump side of the stage ?
And another small point : The quality of the video showing the suspect running past. I find it hard to believe that the Hilton would have had such a rubbish security camera.
The whole thing is beginning to smell fishy. Whilst we can only go on the film footage and reports we read/see, there were plenty of journalists present who could report what they saw and heard.
