When is time to hang up the driving gloves for the final time - metaphorically speaking?

When is time to hang up the driving gloves for the final time - metaphorically speaking?

My driving licence is pink and falling apart. No expiry and although we've moved twice since the address on it, I haven't updated it at the préfecture. That would have resulted in a new, plastic card with a 15-year life and limited transport options.
As Liz said, having family / friends living nearby is a bonus which many don't have and the reason - I suspect - that many pensioners drive for far too long.

The photocard licences have a duration of 15 years but many, quite possibly millions, will still be using old paper licences which had no expiry date at all and therefore will not be subject to medicals or health checks of any sort.
The paper licences mine issued Feb 1974 (and Clean   ) do have an expiry date at your 70th birthday, you have to return it and fill a form in informing them of any medical problems you have, I think you repeat this every three years.

Not just that....at least in rural areas, it's about social contact, popping to the village for bread every day, toddling off to the local club de 3ième age or loto. Given the former lack of traffic and easy pace of life, it wasn't much of a risk before, but is becoming more dangerous for everyone on the roads, now.

But is that a UK paper licence or French, I changed mine some years back for a French card type but was not aware of the 15 year limit on it.

Bizarre - my last UK paper one was green as are all the raggedy UK licences I translate.
Anyway, I don't think the old French one expires until you snuff it.
And even then....

Not so! The UK photo card licence requires the photo to be renewed every ten years.

At 70 a UK "paper" driving licence holder has to convert it to a photocard licence requiring a medical condition declaration to be completed. Renewal is then required every three years.

Edit: to correct errror

Are you still in Spain or back in France?
How do people live without at least one dog in the house?

Have just checked my 1993 French licence, there is no expiry date on any of the categories I need. Ditto on Fixit's very tatty pink paper/card licence
