Normally that kind of damp can be caused by hot on the inside and cold exterior walls.
You might be too late now but you might have been able to get the exterior insulated for 1 euro.
I think the offer may have ended now.

Thank you both we did get SOLIHA around, but it was more like a box ticking exercise and would still end up costing a lot.

Random thoughts:

Identify the cause. Rising damp? Penetrating damp? Condensation?
The solution will depend on what is causing it.
Then you won't be covering up the damp to have it continue to fester behind the new surface.

Yes I suggested rising damp in my first responce as its the norm in old properties.

I don't think its rising damp but condensation, where the 'embrasure' of the window is much thinner then the main wall.

An overview of insulation techniques, including the placo method using a special adhesive to secure insulated plasterboard to the wall. Not everwhere available there are similar approaches, here for tiles in a bathroom: the special board, going horizontal in this case and the result.

Thank you for all the replies, some good thoughts being shared.

As for the problem. It's mostly on the north facing wall and it's always damp outside as our neighbour has a fence 1.5 Mt away, so it creates a damp passage way. We did try to talk to him but he wasn't interested and when we checked with the Notaire they said it was his land and he has left the legal distance from our house.

We did put in new windows with a ventilation slot and installed a VMC which helped a little but when the weather is damp it makes it worse, the room also doesn't get much light as the window faces his fence but the rest of the house is fine.

Just a thought: Does your property have guttering or, like some properties round here, does it rely on extended roofing throwing rain away from the walls?
