Yes now the chassers in the Ariege are saying they can not cohabitate with bears, the one in question was protecting her two young.

I read the story this morning, what was he doing? Could he have steered clear or was he up to no good? And now, what happens to the cubs with winter coming on? B@stard hunters!

Bears have been present in the Pyrenees for centuries but had almost died out when they were reintroduced in the 90s. Unfortunately it seems that man is unable to cohabit with any wild creature - in the Alps it's wolves.
I hope the young bears are able to survive without their mother .... (crossed with Wilbro's post)

With wolves in the Pyrenees also, the number of times on tv you see a dozen dead and chewed in a field with the farmer saying its wolves, when its more than likely dogs as wolves only kill to eat not for the fun of it, where as packs dogs gone wild are like foxes if it moves kill it.
Saw enough of it in my youth in the New Forest Hampshire. No wolves there, at least not back then.

As he was described as a hunter, I don't think he was just out in the woods for a stroll. My guess, only a guess, is that he was waiting for the beaters to drive something less dangerous towards him.

I don't know how people who slaughter terrified animals which are driven towards them can be called "hunters". That is not hunting.

He probably never heard the saying "Don't poke the bear"

He was out hunting Boar, when the bear attacked him, it bit his legs and caused severe bleeding it came back at him so he killed it, self defence in my books, he carried a phone/walkie talkie and called up the other hunters, one of which had training and stemmed the blood flow, he is in a serious condition. Hunting is a very emotional subject so is the introduction of long lost species, but a lot of wild animal can and do cause a lot of damage and their numbers have to be kept in check. Yes I hope the cubs have been caught and will be released when independent enough.

If I'm not allowed to go where hunters are and disturb their habits - why should hunters be allowed to go where protected species live and disturb their habits?

In my opinion - 70 years old or not - if he can't climb a tree he should not be allowed out hunting.

Perhaps Spectrum could enlighten us on what damage bears do; preferably verified not anecdotal by hunters.
