The right to vote after 15 years abroad

#1 Post by Blaze »

Britons living overseas for 15 years to get right to vote in UK elections
Change to law, ending 20-year battle by 100-year-old Harry Shindler, passes critical stage in Lords
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/202 ... -elections
Although he (Harry Shindler) received a letter from Boris Johnson last year promising him that the Tories would finally deliver on their promise, he was not confident the bill would get through the parliamentary schedule.

The relevant clauses in the elections bill passed the committee stage in the House of Lords after amendments on the issue were debated but withdrawn. The bill will proceed to the report stage, where it is scrutinised for any legal loopholes, before returning to the House of Commons for a final vote.

Oh dear, why should you have a vote in a country you don't live in?

Previously it was said that records don't exist after 15 years - so assuming someone wasn't not telling the truth (as if) - I guess the next issue is where you apply to vote and how you prove it after 15 years.

The prospect of 100,000 ex-pats voting in Uxbridge and South Ruislip might be an issue in particular, and in general would it affect the electorate numbers and boundaries?

Do you have to live in a country to have links to it? Some on here, for example, might have a UK pension - so still have links. And they might like, for example, to express their opinion on a government that has affected said pension - or done other things that have displeased them.

edit - Garammar - thou shall not end a sentence with a preposition.

Oh dear, we've been here before - several have already explained. We are still affected by what goes on in the UK, with connections to pensions amongst other things. Brits who live in other countries have never lost their right to vote in UK elections, if they choose to.

You sound like you've relocated to England. Do you still have connections with France - is that why you're on a French forum?

And if St Edmundsbury Council is anything to go by, whether they put the correct postage on the envelopes.

Won't there be some form of online electronic voting available ?

Not sure when or even if the UK will do that - I see a verifiable paper-based system for the foreseeable future given the potential for fraud (not that a paper system is fraud free). Maybe if the old chestnut of ID cards comes to pass then things will change?
