When is time to hang up the driving gloves for the final time - metaphorically speaking?

From what I've heard about car hire here it might be better to just buy a cheapo to get about in and then give it away when you're done with it.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

It has come as a great shock to many over 70’s that they can’t rent a hire car anymore.

Bummer.
Really? Someone should tell Super U. I hired a van 2 months ago and friends who are oldr have hired a car this summer also.

I did hear a while back that you can't hire a car if over 70, but can't remember if that's UK or France. I can't find any French official/gouv site that actually says this.

I think that it may be the case in the UK.

Why would you lose either of those categories?

Because I have read on various forums about them been left off, either deliberately or by a mistake, the French only have a limit of 3.5 tonnes on a normal licence, hence most of the motorhomes are up to 3.5T. I suppose in France you would have have a Class 2 category for anything bigger.

I believe, well they did with OH's last year, she had to rescind her, what they termed heavy vehicle. Uk licence gives up to 7.5 ton as said here it is different, I know I gave up my class 1 LGV entitlement, didn't use it for years, terrible way to earn a living.

Some people lose the special categories when they change from a GB licence to a French one because they don't have the required medical with an authorised medical practitioner. Some categories demand a medical every 3 years. This used to be so with the 'E" towing category but that was dropped about 4 or 5 years ago.

A UK friend had to separately renew her C1 - 7.5 ton category (incl with a medical IIRC) - as the renewal at 70 dropped it .
