Just been watching Charlie, the cat who adopted us, playing with a mouse on the lawn whilst a Jay continually hopped up to him, pecked his bum & retreated.
This has been going on for a good half hour now with no sign of a stale mate as Charlie dosen't seem at all bothered.
I tried to get a photo but each time I got close the Jay flew off to an adjacent tree & recommenced his bum assault the moment I went away.
Looks like Charlie has just lost interest so dunno what happened to the mouse or why the jay was so persistant. Thought it might make supper maybe?

I rather suspect as a carrion bird, the jay is hoping to get a taste of that mouse - unless of course it is just a cat toy.

Jay pecked Charlie
Many years ago, we were walking around Vienna zoo in the early morning. The monkeys (no idea what flavour - I'm not Richard Attenborough) had a large compound with a hill and trees in it and they had been fed recently. A group of magpies pestered the monkeys with bum nips making them change position repeatedly - the magpies then stealing crumbs or larger pieces of monkey scram.
