What Kindle is best?
I have used an e-reader since 2002. The first was a French unit called Bookeen, who make a brilliant tablet/scriber/e-reader today at mere €400. My unit was a lot more basic and of less cost. I am now on my second Amazon unit, a paperwhite (21) which is perfect for reading in different lighting situations and very lightweight when reading in bed. Our bibliotheek and hallways are packed to the ceiling (about 80m of shelves) with real books in many languages, so the e-reader is a travel and bedtime read.

Paperwhite for sure. One caveat: I replaced my old Kindle last year when it died suddenly, and I find that the new one runs out of juice much more quickly, despite offloading books regularly.
I originally had a Sony e-reader which also died after a number of years aznd used a different format of much more expensive books.
Our children will have the doubtful pleasure of dealing with the miles of shelves of mainly English language books when we've popped our clogs.

Mad, I find my kindle eats battery if you keep it connected to the internet. Disconnect it & it lasts ages.

Thanks everyone. The paper white signature edition looks good with a 7" screen and 32GB seems a good bet at £190 or 200€. I'll report back when I've tried it.

Mad, do you turn your kindle off with the button on the bottom or just shut the cover to close it? I find if I just shut the cover it sometimes doesn't turn it off properly.

I admit I just shut the cover. I note it takes an age to get it going again if it's gone "off".

I read books on my ancient Nexus 7 2013 tablet but not with the Kindle app, instead I use a free app called Coolreader which is infinitely customisable and with black text on a white background it's perfectly readable even in bright sunlight. At night, and with a single touch on the screen, I switch to red text on a black background, 'er indoors has exactly the same.
Even at 12 years old if I don't use the tablet for anything else battery will last around 3-4 days but following my normal strategy of putting devices on charge whenever I'm not actually using them battery life is really not a key factor. I can't conceive of any circumstance where I'd need anything like the 4 weeks a Kindle allegedly can last for!
I never pay for books either but that's another story. I've been amassing them for around 10 years and now have several thousand on my PC hard drive and can easily copy them from there to the tablet via my home network.
