Yes [mention]exile[/mention] I wasn't going to elaborate but the producer I know of sat on a chair with a bin of maize by him, the ducks lined up and first came foreward put his open beak on his knee , he put a funnel in ducks beak, poured in a ladel full and it walked to the back of the line ready to come for more.

Totally agree with Doug ! There's good and bad producers... When I lived near Cahors, my neighbour was feeding ducks by means of an electric funnel (bought in a shop - not a risky DIY). Ducks went crazy when she entered the barn and spontaneously queued in front of her, begging for their food. She used to rub gently their neck all the way and they looked to appreciate the massage. And as you say: back to the queue for getting more... Her ducks were like pets ! At the end, her husband had to slaughter the ducks while she was in tears in her kitchen
Most of the farmers love their animals and even say that TLC makes the meat taste better... It's sad that a few fanatics and some medias put the shame on all the profession for crualty. Saying that, I'm convinced that bad behaving employees in the abattoirs should be seriously punished.

Definitely not the nicest way to produce, although I love foie gras...
I know there are those who produce it sans gavage as even the French are sensitive to the practice.

I feel fortunate in hating the stuff, far too rich for me, so no crisis of morality here. But you are right about many French being sensitive. At one of the PAD (Dobermann Association) AGMs we were all asked to bring local produce to the feast (it lasted all weekend, the get together that is, not the feast ) and I decided to take things from my origins as well as my habitation so went along with Stilton cheese, a single malt, and some pate de foie gras.

The first two went down a treat with the all French assembly, but turned their noses up at the last.

I picked up 4 tins of Scottish Haggis in Portugal last week, along with 6 jars of Mincemeat. Black pudding is very popular down here and Spain, the Morcilla de Burgos is great, I eat 3 a month

We bought this day trip on a special offer last year. Fortunately it's valid for another 6 months or so Traveling on the "Fast Cat" to Jersey is always risky at this time of year as they cancel if there's the slightest risk of a sea that's not flat calm !! Two sailings a week at the moment and then down to one. From mid December until something like mid January, there aren't any at all !!
