Weather ... again

We have about 15 stère of three year old wood (does the plural of stère need an "s"?) at the back of the house which we need to bring round into the wood storing/cutting barn aside the house. The central heating is wood fired and we used 10 -11 stère last year - your talk of a cold winter suggests we might need to move all 15!

We resolved to start on Friday but oh for a coughing fit or stubbed toe to come to the rescue.

Dunno about plural but deffo know that's an awful lot of wood to cut, move & store.
We used to heat the house with two woodies & lots of work cutting our own wood until I saw the light & installed 3 air-air PACs (heat pumps).
We now only light the lounge fire in the colder evening for the ambiance, where we settle
down before kip. The bedrooms are heated by convection from the lounge & are never cold.
A pal now cuts & stores wood from our trees, keeps most for himself, & delivers trailer loads direct to our house linked barn storage when needed, which is not very often now. Win-win for us both as I'm getting far to weary to deal with this nonsense.
Best of all, the house was comfortable during the heat waves using the PACs on a/c.

On the plus side, Herself says she enjoys cutting and stacking the wood and, me being me, I would hate to steal her happy times.

€24 a cord (3 cubic metres) is not just cheap it's daylight robbery! Don't blame you for using it for heating especially when you have such a willing & happy assistant

In the event of any extreme weather I keep a couple of 20 l bidons of diesel in a 'safe' place so there's always fuel available for mates or mine tractors to collect/deliver firewood from his huge stock to keep us warm.

Not at all. We ensure we have something like 3 weeks supply of food for us and the chatons. Oil bunker full. Wood for several weeks should the leccy go off. Freezers full - and not opened unless the power outage is very significant. We only have the one wood burner should the power go off but it is 10kW and that will keep one floor warm.

I think we are reasonably set.

Our horsey winter field has been dry as a bone with all the advice telling us not to cut it for fear of a spark setting it on fire.
Finally had to bite the bullet & our farmer neighbour cut, spun & baled it a few days ago with 3 huge 1.7 m dia x 1.5 m tall bales now reposing in our dry storage & the rest at his place for his cows who've been eating this winter's silage as he's also no grass left worth eating.
Since baling it's rained a bit & field now greening up a treat which is good as our nags have eaten anything worth a munch in their summer quarters & have survived on horse nuts, hay & the weedy scraps in their field.
Looking like we'll just scrape by nag nosh wise.
Strange times indeed.
