My friends are doing exactly the same thing for their dog tomorrow. They had a number of problems sorting out the paperwork to bring him out and hope to get everything in place for future visits.

However, I did read on another forum that this opportunity might be blocked, but whilst it’s possible I don’t blame people for doing it.

Having the French one means that they won't have the aggro next time they come back to France.
Oh yes, they know that, but the whole point of the French passport to avoid all the expense and weighty paperwork next time and beyond.

I think you have missed the point David.

Get the French passport now but it won't be valid for travel back to the UK. So use the UK passport to return to the UK. By the time they come back, the French passport will be valid. No aggro with paperwork.

You're right, I did miss the point, and they also explained it to me this afternoon. :D

French passport for English dog?

A pal & his dog are coming over to France tomorrow in their camping car & he's just told me it's costing about £250 for the dog's certificate.
Is it still possible for a UK, non French 2nd home owner, resident to get a French PP for their dog or have things changed since the last posts on this thread?

Nothing has changed. Perfectly possible to get a French passport for the mutt. Our friends who are second home owners have already had their dog passported in France.

Sorry to be a pedant but, does being a second home owner have any influence on getting a PP for mutt or could my pal legitimately ask for one. He's got a rdv arranged with a French vet to get worming certificate to return to UK where he could maybe get one if it's possible.
I'd like to help this ex apprentice of mine but as our mutts have always had French PPs I know very little about the issue of one to a UK resident so all info really appreciated.

The law changed very recently, it’s now impossible for a non resident to get an EU pet passport for their dog.

Thanks for that @DominicBest. Reading that short piece it is not entirely clear whether existing passports remain valid. I fear that they will no longer be valid.

I’m sure that you’re right. I took particular note of the subject when it was a news item because it was something I’d been talking about with friends. They had explained how they were changing their holiday plans because their original plan to come out to their holiday home for a couple of weeks to clean and tidy it ready for a family visit, return to the U.K. then come out again with a larger group a couple of weeks later. The cost of the dogs’ vets fees made that impractical so they’re now coming all together to the unprepared holiday home. A couple of days later I noticed a Camping Car blog on YouTube explaining how to get your U.K. dog an EU pet passport through a vet in Dunkirk. Before I could pass on that good news to my friends the news of the law change appeared closing the loophole. Other friends who were out earlier this year with two Romanian rescue dogs with EUPPs said that they had been OK for early this year but would need to get U.K. vets’ paperwork for their next trip.
