I seem to recall on Total France someone suggesting using an old radio set to 'white noise' would keep the little blighters away - whether it works or not though I don't know.

Ultra sound had no effect on our mice some years ago so, unless they have been improved, I wouldn't waste the money. So-called humane traps I stopped using when one little bugger was too quick for his own good and ended half paralysed with a broken back. The only thing that worked with mice was a trap that electrocuted them instantly. No idea if there is a larger version for what you have though.

Years ago we had what sounded like clog dancing conventions in the space between our sloping bedroom ceiling and the roof. There is no attic in that part of the house so the space is really not deep. After a while Biggles investigated and it turned out that owls were the culprits. Quite how they squeezed into such limited space we have no idea, but fine metal mesh fitted all round solved the problem permanently.
But from the sound of it, there's not enough access for owls to gain access into your attic.

Our little plug-ins with the pretty blue light arrived about 5 days ago. I opted for ones that had good reviews from thousands of people, and thought, give it a go!

Well, not sure if the critters knew what I was up to before arrival, as it was like they'd already started packing their clogs and bags! The description says it can take a few weeks for any little critters to be ousted out and get the message. But since then, there's only been two "hearings" of whatever little four-legged creatures are using our roof space as a nightclub. It's almost like you hear them appear (I literally heard one jump onto the sloping ceiling in our bedroom), then it's like they backtrack, slowly, almost whistling as they go - but that's just my vivid imagination!

They're also very active above the spare bedroom - so I spent a night in there (often do if Mr Bayleaf has had one too many vinos and likely to snore!). Again, the arrival of little feet in the early hours, but no clog dance sequence as it traverses across the ceiling. Just like it was on tippy-toes and slunk away quickly (or fell asleep!)

The pretty blue lights that tell you they're working also double up as useful night lights from the ones plugged in outside the bathroom/loo.

So, let's see how it continues!

Our loft is used as a lounge & bedroom and is insulated and plaster boarded but now and again we hear the odd little runner or scratcher which is OK but two years ago starlings decided to nest under our eaves - what a dreadful noise they made especially their babies and sleeping up there became a no go area which we like to do in summer. We tried everything we could think of to stop them. From the outside OH put padding under the eaves but they pulled it out. We hung wine corks along the guttering but they ended being blown into the guttering so needed something heavier. The thing that did help was hanging old CDs along the guttering - yes it looked a bit bizarre but hey ho and finally music - the CD player exceptionally loud for a couple of hours several times a day did seem to do the trick as they've not been back - So maybe try the radio in your loft.

The simple cheap ultrasound devices are pretty useless. The mice get used to the sound and ignore them. The more expensive units randomly change the frequency of the pulse so they don't get used to it.
We have had a problem with mice everywhere and in desperation tried an electric (battery powered) zapper found on Amazon. Works a treat. Now I just need to find some equivalent that will deal with moles.

Sorry for thread drift, and also for any offended sensibilities, but you can't beat the Detaupeur for that. They're not cheap initially, but you only usually need one or two petards to get rid of the gentlemen in black velvet. Leave the body(ies) in the run. It deters others from moving in.

Very interesting post mon ami. I have been using a pair of detaupers for a few years now and they only occasionally get one. I leave them primed and in place for 3 or 4 days and then move them to a new spot. Every morning I wake to find between 12 and 50 new hills, quite often quite close (both sides) of a live trap. Apart from the crazy price of the units I must have spent well over €100 euros on replacement charges. Before that I tried two types of wire spring traps, poisons, brambles, broken glass, petrol, diesel & sump oil mixes, old distress flares, fireworks, and hooking up my tractor exhaust to fumigate the runs. If someone would like to earn some beer money I will pay (per mole) for proper results. I called a "professional" mole man and he wanted €75 up front with no guarantee of success.

Failing that, can anyone offer a cheap deal on enough concrete to cover about 6,000 sq. metres of grass?
