@ Polarengineer, as for technical information and attempts to get a handle on the MTBF: for decades, I bought the annual car magazines that listed all the data from the annual roadworthiness tests and breakdown service records. Not because I buy a new car every year – on the contrary, I keep them rolling – but out of interest. The very thorough tests from Germany, those from France and, every now and then, a selection from the abundance of British magazines, what is on the road there. That way, you at least get an impression of the strengths and weaknesses of everything on offer.

Nice to see the Brit magazine with my old canvas tilt 99 land rover (at least, one exactly like it). Designed to do precisely what it could do.

PE, I actually quite like yesterday's technologies where you still have some control over things, more grip or lots of grip, and you can sort out mechanical and electrical problems yourself.

And you could work on them without needing the hands of a two-year old to access everything.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

In the summer of 1960 we covered almost all of route 66. LA to St.Louis on our way to New York City. From St.Louis we switched to another highway but I don't remember which. I was only a kid, more interested in the next cheeseburger.

A few months later, November 1960. Not fast enough? What about a sedan that behaves like a sports car.

My ex. commune '86 Deutz D6057 tractor has hardly had a spanner on it since I bought it over 20 years ago.
Finally let me down the other day & refused to rev when using my 2m broyeur .
Revs picked up when broyeur 'lifted' so had to be a fuel problem.
First 'port of call' was banjo fitting on exit from fuel tank & sure enough it was bunged solid.
Only problem for 20 years can't be bad. :D

Have a seat in this Porsche 911 Carrera, the 7th generation 991, presented at the Frankfurter Motor Show in September 2011. It all started on a somewhat more modest scale, as this advert from 1960 shows. A blow-up. A newer Porsche 911 in action in 1973, on Sicily.
