Just as an update, the man from the ministry of justice came around and took copies of all the paperwork when the promise of a secondary payment was reneged upon, so out of about 1600€ I have had one payment of 550€, and a very short email explaining that he was not paying any more as the remaining 1050€ he deemed to be his days wages, when he came in and butchered the wood, plus his mark up on the materials. Back to the concilliator, he was in touch with the "roofer", and says it was very hard work but finally got him to agree to another payment of 550€, and the remaining 500€ would be retained by him. Much as that went against the grain it was better than nothing so that was actioned and I have had the payment. I will now make enquiries the next time I am in Angers at the Chambre des Metiers to see if I can drop him in it with the authorities. The roof has now been completed by another roofer, who has made a good job of it, but even this bloke gave me a devis with a meterage of 49.9m2, and it is in fact 39m2, I waited until he had finished before contesting it, as I had not signed anything, and he has agree to alter the cost accordingly. You seem to have to be on guard with any of them.
