Even the choccies can be a bit of a minefield
Ideally, they should be from a chocolaterie, not the local supermarket. Which can turn out to be an expensive experience!

We take Scotch to various French friends when we visit, taking single malts each time, which they love to serve as aperos with ice.

I think the notion of not taking wine is outdated. Most of my French friends bring wine. But it must be something decent. Flowers are always acceptable

I've always disliked the wine-bringing fashion - doesn't it date from the 60s bring-a-bottle parties ?
The gift is usually destined for the hostess, hence flowers or chocolates being a choice that is unlikely to be wrong.

I've always taken chocolates or a box of macarons from the boulangerie although they seem to prefer the macarons. If it's French we know well and know that they like Scotch then a bottle of Scotch as well. When they've come to us they usually bring chocolates - Ferraro Rocher. I once made the mistake of taking a set of Laguiole cheese knives - well they were in a pretty box with ribbon done especially for Christmas
they were warmly received (probably wanted to get them out of sight quickly) nothing was ever said but I now know never take knives
With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.........The Corpse Bride
