French anti-bullfighting bill hits legal issues

#1 Post by Polly »

According to the Connexion:

“French MPs are reported to have today allowed amendments to be added to a bill designed to stop bullfighting in France, which would cancel its effects.”

However, amendments have been added…………

“It aims to change the French criminal code, which contains rules punishing abuse of animals but includes wording that the punishments do not apply in the case of bullfights which are carried out according to an unbroken local tradition.”

Sounds like a bullfighting backhander to me. It's tradition to torture an animal in front of an audience, just for fun.

FFS.

+2 It's a strange mentality that enjoys killing especially when it also causes pain and suffering.

I would separate the two - killing is necessary for meat - and can be done humanely. I have no issues with that at all.

I am yet to hear anyone with a convincing argument as to how bullfighting is ever in any way humane.

For me it is the absolute cruelty, not the slaughter, that is the issue.

I would hardly call "halal" meat humanely done, to me its barbaric, why do we allow it in a so called civilized country? The DW friends parents had an abattoir so have seen animals killed for meat and how quick it is done. As for bullfighting again not for me to watch or judge.

I would agree - halal slaughter ought to be banned in Europe - indeed all slaughter done without stunning.

As I said above - slaughter can be done humanely if not trying to appease some sky fairy.

One of the problems with getting the bill through the French parliament is, according to France Nympho this morning, that the proposer is a Parisian and not of the bull fighting area of France, and, his presentation and discussions have been very aggressive and unpleasant; this has put members off supporting him even if they largely agree with his bill.
