I would hope that anyone convicted of starting such a fire would be absolutely hammered. Perhaps as Fontainbleau is such a monument the guilty parties will be made an example of. Regrettably French law seems to prevent the names being published even after they are convicted.

Quite apart from a magnificent foret being destroyed, I think of all the wildlife who don't stand a chance of getting away.

It isn't a heavily populated area but with the fires being only 50km from Paris, people are getting nervous.

Just so hard to fathom. People - we are our worst enemy. And yes, I too feel so sorry for the wildlife lost in these fires.

I don't know what type of punishment a 14 and 15 year old will receive if found guilty, but I imagine it won't be nearly enough.

We saw this at 10:30 this morning, and reported it

We do know that there is a small bergerie there that gets used by its owner as a retreat in the summer, I suspect they just arrived for the 14th and decided to clear up. The fire lasted about an hour before the pompiers made there way through the forrest, luckily whoever was having the fire mananged to keep it under control, but it could have so easily have turned into a major incident, where we are, the last rain we had was the 10th May.

Why would anyone think lighting anything outdoors, during heatwaves/secheresse would be ok?

More about the Fountainebleue fire - these people are not right in the head, surely?

One of those people in your link, Bayleaf, is a pompier volontaire who admitted setting fire to some twigs. Unbelievable. It makes one wonder why he became a pompier in the first place. In any emergency service, you come across inexperienced gung-ho types who want to use the 2 tones, gyrophare etc., be in on the action ....

News on TF1 this evening is that the 2 fires have been contained. 6 people have been arrested. Two have confessed, one is an 18 year old and the other a 19 year old 😡
The pompiers still have a great deal to do to make sure the fires don't restart.
