We don't know if any of the nuisance calls are trying to sell us something because we never answer ... and they never leave a message.
The new law will change nothing for us - we'll just continue to ignore calls from numbers we don't recognise.

We would be stuffed without the landline. No mobile phone network penetrates our location and broadband speed is not a lot better.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

My French friends are amazed when I don't answer in their presence. The instinct to immediately pick up the phone is so strong with them. Yet they are the first to complain about cold calling. For me the best numbers are the withheld ones. I've set the DEC phones to silent but the retro phone still rings it's sweet little bell. So I'm treated to a blast from the past whilst I wait for the answerphone to kick in.

Oh dear, here comes my hobby horse ....
I've said this before, but it's something I really dislike about people and mobile phones : when someone else's phone rings, you are no longer of interest as the phone call will always take priority, however unimportant. It's extremely irritating and bad manners.
It's easy to ignore a call and let the caller leave a message - or simply switch the phone off. That said, some people ring straight back without listening to the message so perhaps they expect you to do the same.
As for oldies in waiting rooms whose phones nearly always have an extremely loud and annoying instrumental ring - and they grub around trying to find the bloomin' thing ...

Ours is only ever switched on to receive those infernal security codes, otherwise we wouldn't even have one. That would save the monthly charge.

I have said before on here that we have a female friend who answers her phone immediately and recounts everything said at the other end to the assembled company whether you know the caller or not. This got up my nose so much that she is made to leave her phone away from the table when in my bailiwick - now it gets up her nose! 
When mobiles first came out they were reasonably bulky and had a stumpy antenna on the top - they were quite the status symbol! We were in Hong Kong in a restaurant and a young, corpulent, (is that alright still?) Chinese, business type had his phone stood up on the table for all to see. At one point he went to the loo returning talking loudly into the phone - presumably because some in the restaurant hadn't seen he had one; as he sat down his phone rang. I have never witnesses such a perfect example of international accord as everyone in the restaurant pointed at him and guffawed heartily. He paid and left!
