Paris votes 'overwhelmingly' to ban electric scooters

Let's hope London (and the rest of the UK) is next - and it is enforced - except Sadiq Khan doesn't do democracy so I won't hold my breath.

Only a fraction of the people who could have voted bothered. Most voters were older folk and of course most would have been in favour of banning them.
It's hired ones that will be banned, not privately owned ones. As there seem to be no fixed rules and regs for them, they are a menace. As for even considering allowing children aged 12 to hire them (as one of the 3 Paris hire companies would have done) it's utter madness.
Is an e-scooter considered to be a motorised vehicle ? Should users be subject to some sort of test - code de la route/practical ??

The hire bikes in Paris cost the tax payers a fortune as they were damaged or abandoned and the same would happen to scooters.
The other disadvantage of encouraging the use of scooters is that people will exercise less- walking or cycling. Sure they look great fun, but with the idiotic way some people use them, deaths and accidents will only increase.

A while ago, the first time I had seen one in use here, two youngsters on one cut across by path on a roundabout in town. Clearly some road sense training should be compulsory.

There is one in our village, owned by a young child who goes to the village school. He only lives 0.5 km from school, so there's one child who won't be getting any exercise. He can't be more than about 10.

I have been to US cities that have e-scooters for hire. They are left abandoned on pavements and a truck has to go around town at night to recover them. They are an absolute menace

The hired ones in Paris were the only legal ones, the others have only ever been legal on private land. I’m a great believer in two wheeled transport but I think there is no place for electric scooters on the public road, they are both dangerous and vulnerable. The e-bike however is a great compromise to allow powered unlicensed transport for all.

When I visited my daughter in Zug in Switzerland it was exactly the same. She’s told me that since then the project has been abandoned there too.
