Thousands of unvaccinated French health workers face suspension without pay from Wednesday under a new Covid-19 law that punishes people in care professions who refuse to get immunised against the virus.

President Emmanuel Macron gave workers including staff at hospitals, retirement home workers and the fire service – 2.7 million people in total – an ultimatum on 12 July to get at least one shot by 15 September or resign.

Two months later, thousands of healthcare workers are still baulking at getting jabbed, raising the spectre of disruptions to services in facilities forced to suspend staff without pay, AFP reports.

A hospital in the southern city of Montelimar confirmed that it had already begun cancelling non-urgent operations because of a shortage of vaccinated anaesthetists.

The hospital’s deputy director, Philippe Charre, said three allergy specialists would also be absent over their refusal to comply with the vaccine mandate.

Public sector union the CGT has warned of a “health catastrophe” if the government suspends large numbers of hospital workers and bars vaccine-shy GPs.

“We have to keep these people on the job until they have been replaced,” said Christophe Prudhomme, an emergency services doctor and MP with the leftwing France Unbowed party.

The government has vowed to see the policy through. “We will not back down,” prime minister Jean Castex said last month.

I have to say I have mixed views. I have had two jabs and am trying to arrange to get the UK booster/flu combo in October/November as well.

However, I do question whether the state should ever mandate vaccines or other medical interventions for mentally competent adults.

As for hospitals - some in the US have had to close entirely I understand - not merely cancel operations.

I have to say I have mixed views. I have had two jabs and am trying to arrange to get the UK booster/flu combo in October/November as well.

However, I do question whether the state should ever mandate vaccines or other medical interventions for mentally competent adults.

As for hospitals - some in the US have had to close entirely I understand - not merely cancel operations.

I would not want treated by someone if I was at risk of getting covid from them.
There are places in this world that adults need to be vaccinated in order to travel there.

Similar thing going on in the UK. Trouble is, if so many health workers are reluctant to have the vaccine it fuels those who are anti-vacc because it implies the care/health workers don't trust the vaccine. If not, why not? It doesn't instil confidence for everyone else, surely??!

Not sure about NHS, but certainly it is the case for care homes. And with the current worker shortages, someone could walk out of a menial care home job on a Friday into a similar paying role outside the industry on Monday. Who loses?

There was a news report about this today for Agen. Almost all the staff have accepted the requirement. Down to the last 20 or so who have refused.

It is the UK care sector, it hasn’t hit the NHS yet. I do personally believe in mandatory vaccines unless you have a very good excuse/ reason not to. However I can see a situation where people have to decide which they prefer ,being cared for by unvaccinated people,which could increase the risk of Covid,or not having enough staff to look after them because none vaccinated staff can’t work,

But it is not something new. In the UK surgical staff have to have had a Hep B vaccine.

Perhaps slightly more obliquely, the Venezuelan state mandated that I had to have Yellow Fever Vaccine or I could not enter the country. There was no Yellow Fever in the UK.

In the petrochemicals industry I was subject to all sorts of safety constraints - break them and out on your ear. Ranging from as trivial as wearing a hard hat, through to no mobile phones or computers on the operational site. And incidentally when I was posted from Germany to France I had to undergo over 12 months worth of vaccinations. I never realised France was so dangerous!!

We have at least one former HGV driver here with all the rules he had to follow.

So let's be adult about this. WE are all subject to rules that protect ourselves and protect those around us. Covid injections for those in close contact with the medically most vulnerable in our community does not sound like an over reaction to me.

To work in a hospital I had to produce evidence of immunity to most of the childhood diseases unfortunately I got a lot ofmy immunity the old fashioned way rather than vaccination Luckily a cooperative GP added the antibodies to some bloods I was having. I had to prove I’d had tetanus shots,hepatitis B and TB Vaccine I don’t have a BCG Scar so had to pay for a Heaf test
