@Spardo That's very interesting about your toad. Having seen your other photo with the snake having a go at the frog, it's quite possible that Mr Toad had a lucky escape. With your pond, he probably has everything he needs to lead a "normal" life !

I wonder though, surely snakes don't bite, just swallow, don't they? I suppose Toad could have pulled his leg off to get away but would such a traumatic event in the wild heal over like that, or fall victim to fatal infection?

Anyway, I didn't see him this morning when passing with Jules, now the Archers has finished I'm off up there for my swim, but I am extra careful now, knowing his penchant for hiding in liner folds.

They certainly do bite - or at least some species do. We had a seriously ill dog a few years back after he was bitten by an asp viper on our land. The vet gave a prognosis of anything between complete recovery once the oedema had gone down and the drugs had taken care of the venom to possible amputation a gangrenous leg, to death. Fortunately, he was young and healthy at the time and after a couple of weeks he came through unscathed.

Yes, of course, they have fangs, but aren't they mainly a means of delivering venom, or at least gripping and re-gripping as a means of swallowing? But do they have the sort of teeth that can actually bite off a limb for instance. Time for an expert view, I think.

I see what you mean now Spardo. Perhaps 'chew' would have been a better word since people ofter refer to snake 'bites'. You're right - snakes do use their teeth to grip and re-grip.

I had a quick check on Planet Passion but couldn't find a useful reference to the subject, what I did see though was a picture of a frog eating a snake.

I love dragonflies

I am a big fan of dragonflies Char, and that is a great photo. They are not easy because they are seldom still so my favourites are the Libellulas which are smaller and powder blue in colour, but also easier because they seem to have a regular circuit of the same stopping places so, when you have observed the routine you can wait with lens poised at the next pit-stop.
