Bird identification

Every morning around 8 ish and every evening between 18 - 20, from my hospital room I see a flock of birds swirling and chirping, making quite a noise.

They're quite low if that's a good way to identify them.

They're about the size of a blackbird and look like blackbirds.

Any guesses please?

Probably starlings. They've been very active recently and generally fly in flocks of varying sizes. A large flock can make wonderful patterns in the sky.

Seen during autumn and winter, hundreds or even thousands of starlings flying together, whirling around in patterns is a murmuration of starlings. I love watching them in the evenings in the main square of the town where our apartment is, a swirling pattern moving swiftly, then just as quickly they settle to roost.

Redwings? They should be here now (winter migrants), are in the Blackbird/Thrush family and they do fly in flocks.

They're not so popular in towns where folk park their cars under the trees they roost in

I use a free bird identification app on my phone, it is called Merlin.
Comprehensive and a doddle to use.

I ws sitting in the garden latish one night listening to a CD, suddenly from nowhere these birds appeared and started zipping about as if they were giving a display to the music, I could identify them as Kestrels. Then I realised that it was the CD I had playing, Orchestral manoeuvres in the dark

I often walk through the woods with him!
