We have lots of feeders for the birds and there is a constant stream of tits, great tits, chaffinches, sparrows and blackbirds. Occasional visits by robins, jays, woodpeckers, collared doves and thrushes. Impossible to count the numbers.

We have feeders here in Dept 49. Loads of sparrows, great tits, blackbirds. In 20 years here, I've never seen a blue tit. Bizarre.

Whereabouts in 49 are you? We could send you some of our blue tits. We used to get long tailed tits but haven't seen them for a while.

No way of counting them in our sprawling "garden" (I use that term loosely!) But it's a degree warmer out there this morning, and I can hear lots of birds chattering away! Very heartlifting. :D

That's why the sondage allows you to specify an area within the garden :) I'm just counting the birds on the terrace where the feeders are, and two blocks of garden nearest the house. It won't really be representative of the whole garden but better than nothing :D What I can't figure out is how repeat visits are accounted for. The bluetits, great tits etc., bullfinches, sparrows and robins are backwards and forwards to the feeders constantly, so some are bound to get counted more than once.

We don't have a terrace, or feeders, so the birds are just scattered around the valley in the trees. Like you say - how do you know if you're counting the same birds twice! 8-)

You don't know but it does not matter in the totality of the survey.
