@Bayleaf do you have a specialist for the back problem? If so could you go to them for a repeat prescription and ask for a 12 month one? My Oncologist does a 6 month prescription with a renouveler as part of the scrip so it does me for 12 months. If you don’t have a consultant, it might be worth just biting the bullet and going to one outside the normal procedure to get seen and meds prescribed.

Our local cabinet, in an old house in town, had three doctors when we moved here 12 years ago. One retired and was replaced by a young lady doctor (both my wife's MT's), another left a couple of years ago, another (my MT) retired last year. The young lady, who agreed to be my MT, suddenly became the only doctor for quite a large number of people, and moved to a much newer building in the next town, built not long ago for the Trésor Public, but only a few hundred metres away from our house.

She does not accept appointments by telephone, but only through Doctolib. We now usually only see her a couple of times a year apart from emergencies, and she gives us ordonnances to cover 6 months of our usual medicines. We have to make RDV's for the next visit about 4 - 6 weeks ahead to be sure of getting them at an appropriate time.

If one of us has an urgent problem, runs short of, or needs new medicine, I send her a message via Doctolib, and she gives us a "quick" RDV within a day or so, fitting in between other patients, or writes an ordonnance to collect from her cabinet.

The Doctolib message system works very well and saves everyone a lot of time and travel.

Now, that's an idea! We'll have to plough through his notes to find who it was and where, as it was some years ago. Certainly worth a try.

@Blaze As these are specific pain killers, containing opoids (?) the pharmacy said he has to see a MT in person. He hates Doctors anyway - it raises his blood pressure just thinking about it, so there may be some alternative self-medicating in the meantime!

@Bayleaf I was prescribed with a limited number of pain killers which contained opioids after my thumb op and the pharmacy made them up and counted them out. As it happens, I didn't need them and I returned them to the pharmacy. They're pretty hot on pain management in this area. Hope something gets sorted out for your OH .....

@Bayleaf. I wish your OH well and hope he gets an ordonnance.
Doctors near me are few and far between, hence the reason it's impossible for me to change from flintstones doctor.

Let us know now how doctolib goes.

Thank you for thinking of us. So far Mr Bayleaf seems to be managing without the medication - which was basically codeine. It just means he has to be on relatively light duties and doesn't have a back-up plan (pun not intended!) if needed. It seems that he probably didn't need to be on it everyday, and some of the side effects were pretty unpleasant, so there is an up side after all! The downside is that increased alcohol consumption is the next go-to occasionally.

If it goes on much longer that no Doc is available relatively nearby, maybe the Doctolib service will allow some codeine prescriptions through - they're ok for my migraine pills, and I don't see how that's any less questionable?

Hey ho - onwards and upwards!

I have received an SMS from Doctolib today reminding me about an rdv for tomorrow.
I was wary because there is no time in the message and there was a link that I was encouraged to press for more info.
I rang the secretary who confirmed there is no rdv.
Beware of SPAM messages from Doctolib!
Update - the message was real but not for me. My neighbour who I normally make appointments for has an urgent appt tomorrow made by someone else and somehow the secretary managed to link it to me. All cleared up now but I still won’t click on a link in an sms.

Thanks for the heas up, Headers.
I never click on a link in an email from Ameli or Doctolib but go onto the site to see if it's genuine. For that matter I don't click on any link in an email without checking that it came from an email address that I know.
Doctolib is very good at sending a reminder the day before when you really do have an appointment !

@Bayleaf Have you thought of acupuncture for OH's back? My daughter ended up having an operation on her spine in Bordeaux (!) 3 years ago, which did nothing except drain her bank account. She's been pain-free since consulting her (and now my) acupuncturist in Limoges. He's a doctor, so the usual payment systen applies (carte vitale, etc.). Dr Jenvrin, boulevard Louis Blanc.

That is interesting, thank you for the suggestion. OH's problem is a chipped disc (from a fall in his 20's), leading to degenerative spine disease. I may find the right moment to suggest acupuncture, but a) He's a bloke, b) He's a stubborn bloke, and c) He's a bloke!!!
