Help after losing a spouse.

#21 Post by leclairon »

Thank you, Elsie, for that information. When I helped a friend through the procedures, it was pressurised to get it organised in the 6 days with family trying to get here in time. Am surprised I saw nothing in the press about it. That takes a lot of the pressure off.

I would also like that list, Polarengineer, if you could pass it on to me please.
Thanks

Just a thought ... Can I ask, Elsie, how you find out about these new 'laws'? Do you just go into the service-public every day and check what's new, or are they all published somewhere? I do see some in Le Particulier from time to time.

I just read some French newspapers, where allowed without a subscription. I do subscribe to Le Particulier once every few years when there are major tax changes (otherwise in the library, if it is available). I have quite a few Google alerts on a wide range of topics of current interest to me (some give results every day, others once every few months).
However, I don't keep a record of anything so it is just (vaguely) remembering and then spending time doing internet searches to confirm.
Now, with artificial intelligence (AI) search engines, e.g. the free perplexity it is much easier as there is no need to wade through pages of (often useless) "hits". The results from such searches still give references to the articles used in generating the hits.
I'm surprised how often simple questions are asked in various forums and elsewhere when an answer is now readily available probably in less time than it would take to input their full question on a forum.

It kind of sounds like you're saying we shouldn't bother asking questions on forums, when the information is out there for us to readily search? What would be the point of forums then? I started this thread as I thought it would collate the important stuff for people on here aswell. I know I've learnt a lot more about it, and am thankful for the replies, and to be able to discuss it with others.

I printed out Hotrodder's list and gave it to my client - just the first two pages were applicable in his late wife's case. He was most appreciative. He, and I, have also looked "online" to see what the procedures are, but sometimes it's nice to chat in a quiet forum like our's as you can compile info. for each other and get extra nuggets of help.

It's good to talk. 8-)

It’s better to talk to people and not a bloody bot or AI. They (bots/AIs) will never have the human touch

There are a lot of trivial questions asked on forums. Recently elsewhere, there was question on where a product from a supplier came from. The answer was on the supplier website! I don't understand why they'd not bothered to look there first?

The problem with search engines that are not in your mother tongue and if your knowledge of the language falls short of being very good or better, is that it can be difficult to phrase the search in suitably understood words such that you do not end up wading through pages of dross and still not find what you are looking for.

I find it bad enough in English* sometimes but French searches sometimes lead me to nowhere.

* Just as an example, when planning a trip to the UK and as a railway modeller, I have been known to search for "model shops in xxx". I frequently get several pages of hits offering the services of young women or men before I get any where close to what I am looking for.

You are right though @elsie , some people ask the most ridiculous questions.

Maybe putting xxx in your search was the mistake :-)

There's always that useful mantra to remember "If it doesn't interest you and you can't help - scroll on". Please.

I don't think anyone was referring to you or this thread Bayleaf. I think we've all learned some valuable info from it.
