Didn't need it for Mum's back in 2004, but whatever!

This link may prove useful for anyone else:

Now a five day wait to see what comes back!

I'd no idea that the Casier had anything to do with insolvency etc., although given that there are criminal penalties connected, it seems logical. OH recently received a modest inheritance too, without the need for all this stuff.
Sue's suggestion re a solemn declaration is a good one. Let me know if you need the casier translated (we do them frequently) but if your communications are electrronic, I'd scan it and bung it over the airwaves first. Blind 'em with "foreign"!

Yes, I noticed that the Casier was more to do with criminal activity. The other recommended site was geared towards Companys.

We are inheriting a small gift from an old friend who died this year - and haven't been asked for any insolvency certificate. So, there seems little consistency .....

I have also asked my Bank Manager if he can propose something. He's been very helpful to us over the years. I would rather send the document in French, then they can google it! Can't do all their work for them, but thank you for the offer. Will let you know!!

Sorry, when I made my last post I had assumed you were dealing with a French Notaire, who would probably accept a hand-written declaration - but I don't think a UK solicitor would.

It wasn't me .. it was Crystal's excellent suggestion.
Tho I have a feeling a Notaire might have suggested such a route.

Edit : Ah .. so the inheritance is in the UK ?

OH tells me he had to complete a sheaf of papers to reassure Sue Grabbit & Runne that he wasn't in the money-laundering business. Same sort of stuff as in notarial documents here.

That is standard for any significant transfer. Not sure what constitutes significant but it is certainly quite a bit less than the amount which requires automatic notification to the banque de France - 10k€

I organised for my work pension in the UK to be paid quarterly and on the first arrival had to indicate the source. Fortunately I remembered to to advise them this would happen every 3 months, otherwise I suspect I would have had other demands for source of funds.

Well, the plot thickens after some more investigations have come back. One response said they contacted Banque de France about this, and was told it was strictly illegal for any organisation to requête any personal financial information such as bankruptcy. My own Bank Manager seconded this, saying it is a most unusual (and unnecessary) request. Bless him, he did offer to write a letter if need be, saying we had a clean record as far as the bank was concerned. Naturally that would be in French.

A Declaration of Honour was the best recommendation, so hopefully this will satisfy the UK Solicitors.
