In the context of coronavirus the surgical mask will have limited efficacy, if at all. Surgical masks OK for microbes, coughing, sneezing, spitting etc. Basically a SIZE difference problem.

The evidence is that C19 is not transmitted via individual viruses floating in the air but rather be droplets loaded with many virus particles expelled from the mouth and nose.

But surely you do not just breathe out individual viruses - but they are encased in a tiny bit of snot or phlegm - which is big enough to be trapped?

They protect others. Do I have to post the link once more for those hard of understanding that surgical masks protect others?
Are there better masks? Yes certainly but please do not denigrate the cheap and effective solution for the population at large.

The truth of the matter is that WOVEN masks UK made are less effective and dearer than NON WOVEN KN95 masks made in China.

Bojo is giving another press conference at 5pm, sat through it last night, absolutely stomach churning watching the dithering fart trying to string a sentence together. Javid the same this morning on Andrew Marr, doing his upmost to avoid answering the questions, it appears they are all trained in avoidance procedures, there is never a straightforward answer. Normally they skirt around it by telling what they have done and how well they have done it. Masks yes we wear them the minute we leave the premises, and on the odd occasion someone pays us a visit, it might come as a total shock , but we don't get many of those and we certainly do not encourage guests.

Just a quick heads up that Angelique Coetzee, the SA Dr who first flagged up concerns about the new variant, is being quoted out of context. Her observation that symptoms were mild only applies to the healthy young men she studied. Symptoms may be more severe in older or vulnerable populations. It’s still too early for reliable data on the overall severity of illness caused by the Omicron strain.

Glad to have made the wise choice of mask for 18 months now.
A FFP2/KN95/N95 that gets all three green ticks. The only mask to get this accolade.
Whilst the FFP3 mask also gets three green ticks getting a better percentage retention; this is due to more efficient sealing which I find uncomfortable.
