For many years I represented the UK at NATO and the EU in the field of International Civil Protection. At NATO, I sat next to the US delegates - sometimes from FEMA and sometimes a political appointee.

One time I was addressing the meeting opposing some half baked proposal and, as I made each point (succinctly and eruditely imo) the US rep gave an audible "Attaboy". This went on for several minutes. I was a tad miffed and, as I finished, I turned to him and said "I take it that Attaboy is an expression of your support?" He said "Hey fella, five Attaboys are the equivalent of a Good Job".
