Rabbit - a male friend told me he is wary of holding the door open for a woman since he was subjected to abuse and ridicule a couple of times by women. Those were 2 ill- mannered women. If I'm fortunate enough to receive a compliment from a man - or a woman - I'm thrilled to bits and would of course thank them.

I may have already written this, but I've been an équipier secouriste for many years (same state diploma as the pompiers) and sometimes touching the victim is part of the care. If you've ever been in an accident or had a malaise, it's very comforting when someone holds your hand or puts a hand on your arm/shoulder. Take someone's hand and they will nearly always grip yours back. As an older woman, I can touch anyone I like, but the men, both older and younger all say they are very wary, which is a great shame but understandable.

I am told that the door opening thing is seriously frowned upon in parts of the USA. Personally I would have no problem holding the door open for a woman - or a man come to that. Some of these things are perhaps going too far and I sympathise with @rabbit 's quandary regarding compliments given.

Many women want to be treated as equals but selectively and equal opportunity and equal pay would seem fair.
But it's sad that some women seem to find good manners offensive - perhaps it says more about their complexes than anything else : people are often rude when they're on the defensive.

You are considered rude in France if you don't say "Bonjour" yet being unhelpful or obstructive doesn't seem important. That said, people working in shops today seem to have done the "Be nice to customers course" and it makes a huge change from what we had to expect a few years ago.
A bit off the subject, don't get me started on table manners which seem to be almost non-existant here.

She’s commented about him telling a lot of dirty jokes on set,but her comments were a couple of months ago apparently and have been unearthed by the media now

If what is being said about him now is half true then he sounds a truly obnoxious person. He doesn't seem to have any idea of how to behave normally.
I feel sorry for those people - such as his ghost-writer - who, having signed a contract, were forced to put up with his appalling behaviour.
