Organizing Cop 28 to set global climate goals in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) is a bit like creating a nursery for lambs in a den of wolves... But, hey...
From COP to COP, we have not finished going in circles at great expense and without any convincing results apart from the financial sanction of the little people.
Stopping fossil fuels is undoubtedly wise to preserve the planet but also because these resources will become exhausted and their extraction will become more and more expensive. But this will not be done without fierce resistance from exporting countries and poor countries which have access to nothing else !
Alternatives, if developed, will also see the prices of rare metals (Wind, Solar) and radioactive materials (Nuclear) skyrocket. To avoid suffering from this, our countries must be inventive and above all aim for technical solutions which will not make us dependent on others: this is what de Gaulle, and Pompidou after him, did for the Nuclear in France.
We must distinguish 2 energy needs: stationary (industry and housing powered by cables) and mobile (vehicles: cables can't be used).
If we look at the level of sovereignty, France had the enormous advantage of Nuclear power for its stationary needs (80%). Urgently relaunching the 4th generation reactors (fast neutrons such as Super Phénix and Astrid) would make it possible to recycle waste from old reactors (Uranium 238, of which our stock would cover our needs for 1000 years). And beyond that, don’t forget the fusion but we would have plenty of time…
For mobile needs, nuclear power is not suitable unless it involves electric vehicles and therefore batteries. In addition to the multiple disadvantages of these vehicles, the scarcity of rare metals (Lithium and others) risks very quickly increasing both their cost and our dependence on the countries where they are found ! France's sovereignty therefore depends on the hydrogen engine because this gas is found everywhere.
But, for this, we need visionary and common sense leaders who understand that we must, without delay, stop the stupidities (Wind, Solar) and rush towards the Nuclear of the future and Hydrogen...

Sure all these meetings are just a jolly up for the top brass, never seem to achieve anything in the long run

Grahame Stuart's over 6,000 mile round trip from cop 28 to vote to save Sunak's Rwanda bill sums it all up.

With reference to Biloute's steps to "preserving the planet", the planet will survive by itself. It is humanity that is on its way to oblivion. All the suggested solutions are dependent on wise decisions being made by politicians which are highly unlikely, and they all include rises in cost to the people below them. So far all the biggest decisions seem to be made by the industries that are motivated by profit, not the wellbeing of the general public. I firmly believe that solutions to the problem can only be solved by solutions from the top down. But all the eco-brainwash so far is pointing the finger at us, the people, bidding us to sacrifice thinking "we" are the answer. Turn your heat down. Give up meat eating. Buy an electric car (at twice the price of an ice model)? Fit solar panels (again at huge expense and will need replacement before the loan is paid off). Every move that is touted to make a difference has no effect because rising prices of the alternatives simply serve to keep us (the West) living little better than our ancestors. All the while those people at the opposite end of the food chain carry on without curtailing their lifestyle secure knowing "the system" will keep their investment dividends flowing in.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Whilst China and India continue to build coal-fired power stations, anything we do in Europe is just economic hari-kari - which may of course be the intention.
The first step, if they won't stop, is to boycott all products from such countries - or slap them with massive tarrifs - like 500%.
Of course, the materialistic and profit-driven west won't. So it's time to learn to swim or move to higher ground.
