Oh dear, Woke again

I couldn't believe this article on the BBC about a school in Wales withdrawing Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" from the curriculum.https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cge922jn1z8o

Wales' Children's Commissioner Rocio Cifuentes welcomed the move and said having to discuss the book in class had been "psychologically and emotionally" harmful for some black children.

When I read something like that, I can totally understand people who despair of Woke-ism.
If the black children really have been traumatised by the book, it might be down to the way it was handled by the teachers. This seeking to sweep the past under a Woke carpet is an ostrich effect - you can't pretend bad things didn't happen. Surely discussing such books should be educative, to show that such things should never happen again ? How can white children understand how intolerable things were in America for black people if the subject is never discussed ?
If they want to remove a book from a list, why not simply remove it and explain it's good to vary the list from time to time.
Methinks Ms Cifuentes is trying to make a name for herself.

Of Mice and Men was a classic set book for students at all levels. I can’t begin to add up the number of years I « taught » that book and regardless of the pupil’s ability it was always a successful read.
