seeing things
Whilst awaiting the return of our thieves last night I was intrigued to see a bright bluey whitish light being emitted from what I can only describe as an insect buzzing around our neighbours house. It came on for about 5 seconds then off, came back on agin several minutes and several times later. Any idea what it is??

A tiny keyring led torch held by a burglar?

Unfortunately in view of the very recent theft at my house I do not find these last couple of comments amusing

Understandable, but it's not impossible - it was my thought too when I read you first posting. No burglar wants to get caught, so a quick flash here and there would be normal. If they used night vision glasses, you probably wouldn't notice anything.
All you can do is make yourself as secure as possible. Set noisy booby traps - no, I'm not joking. Work on the principle that they do not want to get caught. If getting into your place is too difficult, they'll look for somewhere easier.
Floodlights that come on with movement are ideal but need to be set at human level so as not to be set off by cats. Floodlights that can be switched on from the bedroom are also useful if you hear a noise in the night. If there is anyone there, they won't hang around.

+1
I used to see signs of a night time visitor nosing around my sheds. To gain access or egress they would have to negotiate a steep grassy bank a little over a metre high. I fitted a well-anchored length of steel fencing wire along the top of the bank just above the grass. One morning I noticed it has worked. The wire had been tripped (over), and must have had the desired effect. No more nightly visits.
